A l'origine de la vidéo

Comme point de départ, Björk a sélectionné un tableau intitulé The Night Spirit of the Valley de la série de peintures à l'huile de l'artiste islandaise Gabriela Friðriksdóttir. Le tableau semblait capturer la sensation globale correspondant à la couleur de la musique. Les différentes formes et personnages ont été animés pour illustrer les mots et les accords, ainsi que les textures musicales.

Dans ce titre, Björk décrit avec ses propres mots comment elle a réussi à sortir d'un vide, d'un trou noir, à s'élever au-dessus et à prendre de la perspective : Only bird's-eye view / Can help me transgress / Out of this hole. Sa chanson Victimhood a des airs de Fugue Bleue. Le terme latin fuga est lié aux notions de fuite (fugere) et de poursuite (fugare). Devons-nous fuir ou poursuivons-nous ? Comment dépasser les limites dans lesquelles nos expériences tragiques nous ont enfermés ? To transgress us beyond our tragedy/transcend this archetype.

Les paroles, sa voix et les tons graves de la clarinette basse, les rythmes envahissants et les personnages animés –– à la fois dessinés et peints –– nous donnent de la hauteur, changeant notre point de vue. de vue, afin que de cesser de fuir et de poursuivre nos fantômes, de nous libérer du sentiment de rejet et ainsi de nous libérer des chaînes de la victimisation.

Synopsis

L'histoire plonge dans la lutte éternelle entre la lumière et les ténèbres, l'espoir et le désespoir. Il explore la résilience de la détermination humaine incarnée par l'Esprit de la Nuit et la Chouette rouge, qui trouvent force et réconfort au milieu de l'adversité. Grâce à l'interaction des couleurs, de la musique et du symbolisme, cette histoire invite les spectateurs à un voyage épique dans un monde où l'espoir est une oasis au milieu des ténèbres.
Au fur et à mesure que l'histoire se déroule, les personnages sont aux prises avec des questions profondes. Have they transgressed ? Have they transcended ? Can they break free from the shackles of victimhood ?

J'ai en quelque sorte cette idée illusoire de moi-même comme étant ce genre d'optimiste. Mais il faut être honnête… Il est difficile pour un optimiste de s'apitoyer sur son sort. Parfois, cela devient le rôle des femmes, dans des situations difficiles, d'assumer la catharsis et le travail émotionnel, et s'il y a des ombres ou des forces sombres dans une situation, nous les convertirons en une sorte de bonne énergie pour les autres membres de la famille…Pour qu'ils ne soient pas obligés de le faire, nous nous en occupons. C'est aussi une sorte de chapeau de victime étrange, vous choisissez de le porter, même si personne ne vous l'a demandé. C'est peut-être là que l'humour entre en jeu. C'est très intéressant. J'aime tellement ces peintures. Ces personnages sont si magiques, ils ont une signification profonde pour moi.

Inluences et références

The idea of a funeral procession came from conversation with Bjork about paying respects to her mother on the land where Hildur use to pick herbs. Bjork pointed to Kurosawa's Dreams (Rêves, 1990), the fox wedding scene as reference for the precision of the song & choreography. I began drafting concept art and referencing East Asian scroll paintings of processionals, featuring bodies graphically staged against landscape. And evolved the story to center around the idea of a “mikoshi” or spirit vessel. In this case, the procession carries bjork's mother's spirit through a gong to its final resting place.<3

After completing “Ancestress,” Björk thought of her mother's sendoff and realized what had been missing : nature. In extravagant movie funerals, she recalled, “There was always somebody burning the boat or throwing the ashes from a cliff. I just felt really weird to be inside a church where you were letting the spirit go. So I made up my own ritual.”
She spent a year working with director Andrew Huang and James Merry, her mask maker and co-creative director, to dream up and film a ritual funeral procession in a mountain valley, set to both “Sorrowful Soil” and “Ancestress.” (One part was shot beside a volcano, she adds, “Because it's about the mother energy, so the volcano is obviously giving that.”) This visual requiem to her mother will come out when Björk is ready, after some of Fossora's lighter, more puckish singles. Though wary of sensationalizing her grief, she hopes the film will help form a “protective bubble” around her mother's memory.

For Arisen My Senses, Björk and Jesse Kanda drew on a strange and beautiful set of influences. “A couple of years ago, this giant unidentified creature washed up in Indonesia,” Jesse explains. “It was this gorgeous mound of white skin and fat and flesh in a pool of blood on a sunny beach. That really moved me – like total awe. It was the combination of something so catastrophic being so beautiful at the same time, the mystery and fantasy of what it actually was, and the connection to the grander ecological context.

“Björk had been playing a video of leopard slugs mating at her concerts, so I knew she and I both loved that as an image. And another kind of obsession I keep coming back to is amniotic sacks, and making sculptural work that depicts birth and death. But this is the first time I did birth, death and mating at the same time.”

It's testament to Björk's legacy that it's not surprising to hear that in her new video she appears inside an enormous, writhing, alien-slug sculpture. What is surprising is that there is someone in London called Tristan Schoonraad who is the go-to man for making enormous, writhing, alien-slug sculptures.

Hi Björk ! In Arisen My Senses you change forms. If you could augment any part of your body, what would you do and why ?
When me and Jesse first talked about the video, I told him my instinct was that it was like flowers blooming on every beat of the music, and we, with James [Merry], talked a lot about orchids. I was probably really into being a plant and human mutant, an optimistic hybrid after the apocalypse — a little fucked up perhaps, but very happily so. James and me worked a lot on those which ended up on the photos and the other videos. Jesse then took it to the next level and turned to moths transforming into butterflies.

The video for Arisen My Senses is like a simultaneous life cycle. When life feels overwhelming, what do you do to make yourself feel better ?
Again and again I turn to music for everything. I try to put the right song on in the mornings and if I get the match right — not too eager and not too passive — it manages to elevate the day. But it is a constant trapeze act to be honest.

We shot a new video and I had to make a lot of new pieces. I'm just learning how to make them more refined – thinner and easier to wear. I had to make them for 11 flute players, as well as Björk, for something we did recently so I had to churn them out in different colours and configurations.
