Björk festival cancellation ‘not due to politics’

EXIT festival boss claims political blast had nothing to do with cancellation

The organiser behind the forthcoming EXIT festival in Serbia has disputed claims that Björk was dropped from the festival due to her comments about Kosovo.

During a concert in Tokyo last month Björk dedicated the song ‘Declare Independence’ to Kosovo, which recently declared its independence from Serbia.

Björk then said she was removed from the forthcoming EXIT festival bill, with media reports, including one in the Icelandic Review, claiming that the reason for her removal was her song dedication.

“Maybe a Serb attended my concert [in Tokyo] and called home,” the singer told Morgunblaðið, “and therefore the concert in Novi Sad was cancelled.”

However, organisers behind the EXIT festival, set to take place in July, have today (March 3) released a statement claiming that the singer has not been dropped due to to the outburst and she has not been cancelled.

In the statement EXIT’s general manager Bojan Boscovic said : “These stories are quite bizarre and untrue. EXIT festival has never cancelled any artist’s performance because of their political point-of-view or statements.”

It is now not currently clear whether or not Björk will be playing the event.
